Seattle's anti-caste discrimination law — Prejudice or a burning need?
Seattle has become the first US city to outlaw caste-based discrimination after its local council passed a resolution, moved by an Indian American politician. Seattle scripted history on Tuesday by becoming the first American city to pass a resolution outlawing caste-based discrimination after its council voted in favor to add caste to the city's anti-discrimination laws.

The resolution was moved by Kshama Sawant, a Seattle City council member and an upper-caste Hindu, and was approved by the Council by six to one vote.
"It's official: our movement has won a historic, first-in-the-nation ban on caste discrimination in Seattle! Now we need to build a movement to spread this victory around the country," Sawant, the only Indian-American on the Seattle Council tweeted after the historic resolution was passed.
The resolution has, however, not gone down well with a section of the Indian-American community, as many are of the opinion that the resolution targets the South Asian diaspora in the US.
